Royal visits

With the promise of good weather on Friday 6th May, for the first ever visit to the school from a reigning Monarch, this selection from the Archive shows past visits from members of the Royal family.

H.R.H. The Prince of Wales inspecting the Corps, 13th June, 1935.

 

H.M.Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother’s visit to both schools on the occasion of the opening of Newcroft at the Boys’ and the opening of the new South Wing at the Girls’ on 13th June, 1958. The two photos show the boys, waiting, with their cameras at the ready, in Gravel Quad and the Queen Mother, with the Headmistress, Miss Barbara Russell, chatting to the girls in the cookery room at Kings.

 

The Duke of Kent came to open the new Junior School building on 14th October, 1980. He was presented with an oil painting by Brian Bennett, Art Master. The Duke is pictured in Newcroft, talking to Brian Bennet and Peter Gibbs, Science Master.

 

The Duke of Edinburgh visiting the Girls’ School on 30th October, 1959 for the presentation of D of E awards. This photograph shows the girls giving a life-saving demonstration in the Geography Room.

He is flanked by the Headmistress, Miss Barbara Russell and staff members, Miss Edwards and Mrs Sanderson.
