Royal visits

The celebrations for the 475th anniversary of the school's foundation were made extra special by the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Friday 6th May 2016. The sun shone for the first ever visit to the school from a reigning Monarch.

The photographs show members of the Royal family on previous visits to the school.

H.M.Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother visited Berkhamsted on 13th June 1958 for the opening of the Newcroft building at the Boys’ school and the opening of the new South Wing at the Girls’ school. The two photos show the boys with their cameras at the ready in the Gravel Quad and the Queen Mother with the Headmistress, Miss Barbara Russell, chatting to the girls in the cookery room at Kings.

The Duke of Kent came to visit to open the new Junior School building on 14th October, 1980. He was presented with an oil painting by Art master Brian Bennett. The Duke is pictured in Newcroft, talking to Brian Bennet and Peter Gibbs, Science Master.

The Duke of Edinburgh visited the Girls’ school on 30th October, 1959 for the presentation of the D of E awards. The photograph shows the girls giving a life-saving demonstration in the Geography Room. The Duke is flanked by the Headmistress, Miss Barbara Russell and staff members, Miss Edwards and Mrs Sanderson.
