Cataloguing the items from one of the OBs boxes was a task over two days, as anything that had the remotest of connections had been ‘popped in’ the box for safe keeping.
Amongst the array of old envelopes and papers, I came across a selection of Annual Dinner menus. Some beautifully decorated, others plain and quite a few with the signatures of the attendees. As many past food favourites are now being tagged as ‘Retro’, I wonder if Pigeon and Mushrooms will ever feature at a future OBs dinner?
These featured magazines carry articles about Berkhamsted Boys and Girls’ Schools.
The Illustrated London News dated June 28th, 1958, has a four page article, the third in the series, entitled The Education of British Youth – Berkhamsted School. Four sketches by Dennis Flanders, show The Quad (double page) the Cloisters, Old Hall from the South side and a view of Deans’ Hall between the Chapel and Library, with accompanying historical text, mentioning that the School was a pioneer in Science teaching, when the first laboratory was opened in 1874.
The School & College magazine, dated March, 1964, features a double page, Profile piece on Barbara Winifred Russell (Headmistress 1950 -1971), describing her as ‘the alert, vigorous Head of an alert, vigorous School.’ There was a small snippet from the Daily Express dated June, 1966, tucked inside the front cover. It was a quote from Miss Russell, who was speaking at the Boys’ Prize giving – “Educate a boy and you educate a man. Educate a girl and you educate a family.”
Another attic find, covered in dust and grime, this charming, handmade frame, incorporating the School crest has scrubbed up well! Provenance unknown.
